WHO IS PENGUIN CYCLES?

Eric & Raina bike touring in New Zealand (2007)Penguin Cycles is a 2-person operation established in 2006 under the shadow of Mount Ascutney in Brownsville, Vermont. The first Penguins were born out of a desire to explore the miles of dirt roads surrounding our community without the jostling ride of a road bike or the inefficient feeling of riding a mountain bike on the road. Thus the first few Penguins lie somewhere on the spectrum between cyclocross frames and commuter frames. With a fleet of Penguins already on the road (& trails) Penguin is ready to build your custom frame, be it a back roads cruiser, single track explorer, or serious race machine.

WHY PENGUIN?

Ok, so penguins are a little goofy looking (the animals, not the bikes) but these animals are purpose built. Every aspect of a penguin is adapted to survival and efficiency. No frills, just function. Each and every Penguin bicycle is carefully adapted to its owner with a strong emphasis on quality and serious attention to detail. They are designed to give you everything you want and need, and nothing that you don't want. That is the beauty of a custom bicycle.

ERIC DESIGNS & BUILDS

Eric's combination of a mechanical engineering background, past experience in metal fabrication, and love of cycling led to the harmonious match called framebuilding. He is an avid cyclist competing in both road and 'cross racing, and he enjoys playing on the tight east coast single track. Since his proportions aren't quite standard, finding a bike that fits well hasn't been as easy as picking one off the shelf. This motivated him to make a better bike for himself. Eric designs all Penguin frames with a solid engeering foundation and fabricates the frames with a strong attention to detail.

RAINA IS BEHIND THE SCENES

Raina hardly working - NZ Vacation 2007Raina takes care of business with all the behind the scenes, unglorified tasks. Her willingness to participate and take on this aspect of the business is what allowed Penguin to be. Her background in mechanical engineering, metal fabrication, and fitness training/coaching allows her to support and critique the Penguin design and fabrication methods.
